Understanding Eyelid Conditions

Blepharitis is a relatively common eye disorder in both children and adults. Symptoms include burning, itching, redness and swelling of the eyelids as well as eye irritation, dye eye, tearing and crusty debris around the lash line (especially after sleep). Causes of blepharitis include bacteria and allergies. A special cleaning regime of the eyelids and, in severe cases, antibiotics, can manage this chronic condition.

Chalazion (Stye) is a painless bump inside the eyelid caused by a blocked oil gland or a healed internal stye. While benign, a chalazion can press on the eye and cause blurred vision. Warm compresses and massage of the eyelid can help the Chalazion drain. If not effective, an in-office procedure or corticosteroid injections at Yaldo Eye Center can clear the contents of the chalazion.

Styes are an infection of one of the oil-producing glands at the base of an eye lash. A stye may cause light sensitivity, tearing and the feeling of a foreign body in the eye. Local pain and discomfort is to be expected as the stye comes to a head. Warm compresses often help resolve a stye. Never force a stye to drain, as it could result in an eye infection. If styes are a repeating issue, regular application of an antibiotic might be prescribed.
